Do it yourself? Yes, you can!
Finishing is a fun do-it-yourself project whether you want to create a very personal gift, start a family tradition, or involve the whole troop in a craft project. We offer a few of our most popular solid wood pieces unfinished - you can purchase any item in completely bare wood, some are also available with a solid white base ready for your creative touch. One elementary class produced a very original piece for a school fundraiser, another clever Mom put all the kids' names and handprints on a special gift for Grandma --- or what a great way for kids to welcome the newest member of the family! With adult supervision your children can create one-of-a-kind gifts or special accessories for their own rooms.
Unfinished furniture is sanded and ships fully assembled, except as noted. "White" items are sanded, primed, and pre-painted with two coats of white, water-based paint. Most unfinished pieces ship in 1-2 weeks, pre-painted 'white' pieces take 2-3 weeks. Please allow an additional 3-5 business days for FedEx Ground delivery.
HOW TO: Start with bare wood to use a tint or stain that lets the grain show through, and some of the antique, crackle or distressed finishes are better started on bare wood too. The pre-painted option is convenient if you want to hand paint a design, even if you plan to cover the white with another background color. Kids may enjoy using stencils, stamps, decorative sponges or paint pens - and there are fun non-paint options like decoupage to consider as well.
We suggest you seal and protect your work with a clear poly or acrylic finish. And we strongly recommend low-odor, water-based products -- smelly paint isn't good for anyone! We can't list all the decorative finishes here, but a trip to your local craft and/or paint store is sure to provide lots of creative options. And check out the Better Homes & Gardens website, always something new and good instructive "how-to's."
We know our customers are some of the most creative people on the web - if not the entire planet -- so we hope you'll send us photos of your work ;) Have fun!
